Glamorous and exotic, actress and singer Ester Rada was born in Israel of Ethiopian heritage. She forged an amazing hybrid out of Afropop and the contemporary music happening in Tel Aviv’s ultra-hip clubs. What emerged was a soul singer influenced as much by Nina Simone and Aretha Franklin as by Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill. Ester released her self-titled debut album in 2014 and became an overnight sensation, soon gaining wide acclaim on a tour of North America and Europe. Often called a retro-soul singer, the velvet-voiced Ester combines torch jazz, funk, and even reggae with enough touches of so-called “Ethio-jazz” to give her a unique and compelling sound.
Opening act:
Singer-songwriter and guitarist Pierre Aderne was born in France but was raised in Brazil, his mother’s homeland. Musically precocious, he started a rock band as a teenager but eventually began performing more classic Brazilian music. Before long he was opening for stars like Ben Harper, and this summer he can be found opening for the famed jazz singer Melody Gardot. Lyrical and seductive, the samba-light, bossa nova, and tenderly evocative music of Pierre Aderne, performing with pianist Júlio Resende, caresses listeners like a warm tropical breeze.
