UVic Café Historique: Oil: From Imperial History to Daily Lifev - Oct. 4, 2023

Join Martin Bunton as he reflects on oil as an important historical force over the course of the 20th century

As the age of oil seemingly (hopefully) comes to an end, this talk will reflect on oil as an important historical force over the course of the 20th century. With a close but not exclusive focus on the Middle East, we look at the relationship between oil and empire (British and American), and the relationship between oil and democracy (or lack thereof). We will also look at how these stories have been told in different ways, and from different points of view.
