SMETANA Má Vlast (My Homeland)
Bedřich Smetana created the very definition of Czech music with his iconic work Má Vlast, a cycle of six symphonic poems that capture the love and pride he felt for his homeland. Smetana began work on the composition in September 1874; by October, he was completely deaf, but he defied this condition and went on to complete the work by 1879. He was unable to hear its first performance, or its exultant reception. While its first two movements, Vyšehrad and Vltava (Moldau), are often performed individually, this concert presents a rare opportunity to hear the complete cycle, performed by three orchestras.
