In what has become a Victoria tradition, John Reischman and the Jaybird Trio are fluttering into town for their 8th Annual Christmas Concert and Benefit. You can expect the usual intimate performance, stunning instrumentals and soaring harmonies from these masters of acoustic music.
This year, the evening will showcase a broader musical offering, with the Jaybird Trio (John Reischman on mandolin; Trisha Gagnon on bass; Nick Hornbuckle on 5- string banjo) being joined by guest musicians Eli West on guitar and Trent Freeman on fiddle.
Also featuring Wellesley Station (Nick Hornbuckle; Miriam Sonstenes, fiddle; and Rachel Capon, cello)
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the music, Vancouver's John Reischman is one of the acoustic world's top-ranked mandolin players and composers, renowned for his exquisite taste, tone and impeccable musicianship. He is revered for his ability to play genres ranging from bluegrass to jazz to hot swing to Latin and beyond.
The Jaybirds have accumulated several European and North American tours, five critically acclaimed albums, two Juno nominations and two Canadian Folk Music Award nominations. Like the mandolinist at its helm, the group fashions a stylish, elegant take on bluegrass that is at once innovative and unadorned, sophisticated and stripped-down, happily old-fashioned, yet unselfconsciously new. Their live show has a genial blend of story-telling and side-show humor behind their studied performance of original songs, instrumentals, and freshly arranged traditional material.
$5 of every ticket sold will be donated to Our Place Society.
